يعتبر هذا المخلوق من المخلوقات النادرة والعجيبة في عالم الحيوان يتواجد فقط في أمريكا الشمالية وبالضبط في شرق كندا و شمال شرقي أمريكا.
يعيش في المناطق المنخفضة والرطبة بالقرب من المستنقعات والجداول.

يتغذى على اللافقريات الصغيرة ,الحشرات,الديدان والرخويات.تعتبر سباحة جيدة ويقوم بحفر قنوات سطحية تحت الأرض.
ينشط في الليل والنهار ويبقى نشطا في الشتاء.يقوم بالسباحة وحفر القنوات تحت الثلوج.

يغطي جسمه فراء مضاد للماء لونه بني يميل للسواد.يمتلك أقداما عريضة وذيلا غليظا وطويلا حيث يستخدم لتخزين الدهون التي يقوم بالاستفادة منها في فصل الربيع.

طول الحيوان البالغ من 15-20 سم ويزن تقريبا 55 غرام.لديه 44 سن.
أهم مميزات هذا الحيوان 22 مجس وردي متحرك في مقدمة الأنف يستخدمها للتعرف على الطعام عن طريق اللمس.وهو يقوم مقام حاسة النظر حيث انه لا يرى.
يتم التزاوج في أواخر الشتاء وبداية الربيع حيث تحمل مره واحدة خلال العام وتنجب من 4-5 صغار في أواخر الربيع وبداية الصيف.
