خطب رجل من بني كلاب امرأة فقالت أمها: دعني حتى أسأل عنك.
فانصرف الرجل وسأل عن أكرم الناس في الحي عليها ، ومتوقع أن تذهب اليه وتسأله عن الخاطب ، فدل على شيخ منهم كان يحسن المحضر في الأمر ، فذهب اليه قبل أم البنت وسأل الشيخ أن يحسن عليه الثناء، وانتسب له، فعرفه.

ثم إن العجوز غدت عليه فسألته عن الرجل الخاطب ، فقال: أنا أعرف الناس به.
قالت له: فكيف لسانه؟ قال:مدرة قومه وخطيبهم.
قالت: فكيف شجاعته؟ قال: منيع الجار، حامي الذمار.
قالت: فكيف سماحته؟ قال: ثمال قوم وربيعهم.
وأقبل الفتى فقال الشيخ: ما أحسن والله ما أقبل، ما انثنى ولا انحنى. ودنا الفتى فسلم فقال الشيخ : ما أحسن والله ما سلم، ما فار ولا ثار. ثم جلس فقال الشيخ: ما أحسن والله ما جلس، ما دنا ولا نأى.
ثم ذهب الفتى ليتحرك فضرط j.
فقال الشيخ: ما أحسن والله ما ضرط، ما أطنها ولا أغنها، ولا بربرها ولا قرقرهاj.
ونهض الفتى خجلاً، فقال: ما أحسن والله ما نهض، ما ارقد ولا اقطوط.
فقالت العجوز: حسبك يا هذا، وجه إليه من يرده، فوالله ولو سلح ( خرأ ) j في ثيابه لزوجناه.
