ALGIERS - A WOMAN in Algeria became the sixth person in a week in the country to set herself on fire in replica of immolation protests that ousted the president of neighbouring Tunisia, media said on Wednesday.
امرأة جزائرية تعتبر سادس شخص في ظرف أسبوع يضرم النار في نفسه كانعكاس للمظاهرات الدامية التي أطاحت بالرئيس بن علي في الجارة تونس، كما ورد في الصحف اليوم الأربعاء
The woman, in her fifties, soaked herself with an inflammable product and tried to set herself on fire when a local official convinced her to stop, the El Watan daily reported, adding that she wounded only her hand as a result.
المرأة في الخمسينات من العمر بعد أن صبّت على نفسها مادة قابلة للاشتعال و حاولت إضرام النار في نفسها عندما تدخّل بعض المسئولين لإقناعها بالعدول عن ذلك، كما ذكرت صحيفة الوطن، مضيفة أنها أصيبت بجروح في يدها كنتيجة لذلك
She was protesting in front of the townhall in Sidi Ali Benyoub, south-west of Algiers, after being denied housing aid, the newspaper added.
و كانت المرأة قد احتجّت أمام مقر بلدية سيدي علي بوناب الواقعة جنوب غرب العاصمة، بعد أن ووجهت بالرفض لطلب الإعانة للحصول على منزل، كما ذكرت الصحيفة
The attempted public suicide is the sixth in a week in Algeria, where mounting public grievances over rising costs and unemployment triggered protests earlier this month that left five people dead and over 800 injured.
محاولة الإنتحار هذه هي السادسة في غضون أسبوع في الجزائر، بعد الغضب الشعبي العارم لارتفاع أسعار السلع و معدلات البطالة، مما سبب مظاهرات عنيفة مطلع هذا الشهر مخلّفة خمسة قتلى و أكثر من 800 جريح
An unemployed father-of-six demanding a job and housing was hospitalised on Tuesday after torching himself. Four other Algerians have set themselves alight since Jan 12.

They were all following the example set by 26-year-old Mohamed Bouazizi who died after setting himself ablaze at a protest in Tunisia in mid-December. His death sparked an uprising and led Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to flee the country after 23 years in power. -- AFP
