سليمان حليف قديم لواشنطن

كشفت بعض الوثائق الدبلوماسية الأميركية التي نشرها موقع ويكيليكس أن نائب رئيس الجمهورية المصري عمر سليمان المؤيد من إدارة أوباما بوصفه عنصرا أساسيا لتحول سياسي منتظم هو حليف قديم لواشنطن التي وصفه دبلوماسيوها كثيرا بأنه مستشار الرئيس حسني مبارك

وتشير الوثائق إلى الرجل الذي كان يترأس مؤخرا جهاز المخابرات العامة المصري بأنه مفتاح العلاقات الثنائية. كما تصفه بأنه رجل "محل ثقة كاملة لمبارك" وأن سفيرة أميركا الحالية في مصر مارغريت سكوبي التي أوصت به قالت عنه إنه "عملي ويمتلك عقلا تحليليا جبارا"
وتصف البرقيات كيف تناول سليمان كل جانب من السياسة الخارجية في الشرق الأوسط، بما في ذلك المفاوضات حول النزاع بين الإسرائيليين والفلسطينيين وحرب العراق واحتواء النفوذ الإيراني. وفيما يتعلق بكل هذه القضايا كان يُنظر إليه على أنه يتصرف بتوافق مع المصالح الأميركية
وتشير إحدى البرقيات التي نشرتها فايننشال تايمز إلى وصف سليمان طهران بأنها "خطر كبير على مصر" وأن إيران "كانت تدعم الجهاد وتفسد السلام وساندت في الماضي المتطرفين في مصر. وإذا ساندوا الإخوان المسلمين فإن هذا سيجعلهم أعداءنا"
عمر سليمان شعر باستياء شديد عندما أخلف الرئيس مبارك وعدا سابقا بمنحه منصب نائب الرئيس. وفي مكان آخر سجلت البرقيات استنكار سليمان لفكرة توريث السلطة وأن يكون جمال مبارك رئيسا
وقالت الصحيفة إن سليمان كثيرا ما أكد على التهديد الذي تشكله جماعة الإخوان المسلمين لكن هذا الجدال لم يؤثر دائما في الدبلوماسيين الأميركيين
وجاء في برقية كتبها فرانسيس ريتشياردون، السفير الأميركي آنذاك، في نوفمبر 2005، أن "المصريين لديهم تاريخ طويل في تهديدنا ببعبع الإخوان المسلمين". وأضاف أن "أفضل طريقة لمجابهة سياسة الإسلاميين الضيقة الأفق هي بفتح النظام"
كذلك تكشف البرقيات أن سليمان قد فوض خطوات وحشية لمنع المهاجرين الأفارقة من دخول شبه جزيرة سيناء في طريقهم إلى إسرائيل ونقل عنه في إحدى البرقيات قوله إنه يمنع "كل السود من دخول سيناء حتى لو كانوا سياحا"
وتبين البرقيات أيضا أن نفوذ سليمان في أكثر مشاكل الشرق الأوسط تعقيدا امتد إلى التمرد الداخلي في العراق وأنه أثناء اجتماع في أفريل مع دبلوماسي أميركي قال سليمان إن جهازه كان على اتصال بالمقاومة السنية في العراق "وكان مستعدا لتعميق هذه الاتصالات إذا ما اتفقت الحكومة الأميركية معه في الرأي"
وأوردت برقية أخرى أن سوزان مبارك زوجة الرئيس كانت مؤيدة شديدة الحماس لابنها جمال. وجاء في برقية بتاريخ افريل 2006 أن سلطة ونفوذ السيدة سوزان كانا مفتاحين لبقاء جمال باعتباره المرشح الرئاسي. وفي تصميمها على تمهيد الطريق لابنها منعت سوزان زوجها من تعيين نائب للرئيس كان من المرجح أن يكون سليمان.
