Stereo (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory), mission spatiale de la Nasa réalisée dans le cadre du programme international d'étude des relations Soleil-Terre, consiste en deux satellites jumeaux : l'un précède la Terre dans sa révolution autour du Soleil et l'autre la suit.
Lancés en 2006, les satellites ont atteint un point précis hier : ils étaient positionnés de chaque côté de notre étoile et transmettent à présent sans interruption des images de l'astre sous tous ses angles... Chaque sonde photographie la moitié du Soleil et transmet ces images à la Terre, où les chercheurs combinent les deux perspectives pour créer le portrait 3D d'une sphère. "Pour la première fois de l'Histoire, nous pouvons observer l'activité solaire dans toute sa gloire tridimensionnelle", explique à l'agence QMI Angelos Vourlidas, membre de l'équipe scientifique STEREO au Laboratoire de recherche navale à Washington, DC.
L'ensemble des données récoltées par STEREO permet notamment de mieux étudier les éjections de masse coronale qui ont lieu dans l'atmosphère du Soleil, et leurs impacts sur l'environnement terrestre.
Ces événements ont lieu dans la couronne solaire, la partie la plus haute de l'"atmosphère" de notre étoile, où les températures atteignent plus d'un million de degrés. Plusieurs milliards de tonnes de matière sont alors éjectées à des vitesses de près de 3 millions de km/h, selon le CNRS. Cette matière éjectée à grande vitesse peut atteindre notre planète pour y induire une multitude de phénomènes : aurores boréales, irradiation des spationautes, perturbations des communications radios ou de la distribution de l'électricité...
