اعتبر عضوان بارزان في مجلس الشيوخ الأميركي أن إسرائيل ستنعم بقدر اكبر من الأمن على المدى البعيد بوجود أنظمة ديمقراطية قد تنبثق عن موجة الثورات في العالم العربي.
وقال السيناتور الجمهوري جون ماكين ردا على سؤال لشبكة «سي.ان.ان» الأميركية من القاهرة حيث يقوم بزيارة برفقة زميله السيناتور المستقل جو ليبرمان «على المدى البعيد، اعتقد أن الإسرائيليين مقتنعون بأنهم سيحظون بعلاقات أفضل مع أنظمه ديمقراطية بالمقارنة مع العلاقة مع أنظمة ديكتاتورية».
وقال ليبرمان إن «شعورا بالانزعاج» يسود في إسرائيل «بسبب التغييرات الحاصلة» في العالم العربي، إلا انه أشار إلى أن نتنياهو ابلغهما دعمه هذه الثورات خصوصا في مصر.
وأضاف السيناتور المستقل الذي زار مع ماكين ميدان التحرير في القاهرة الذي شكل مركز الثقل للثورة المصرية التي أطاحت بنظام الرئيس حسني مبارك بعد ‬30 عاما من الحكم انه «من مصلحة الولايات المتحدة دعم عملية انتقالية ناجحة باتجاه الديمقراطية في مصر وسائر أنحاء العالم العربي». وتابع ليبرمان القول: «أرى مستقبلا مشرقا للشعب في مصر وعلاقات أفضل بين مصر والولايات المتحدة».
ورأى العضوان البارزان في مجلس الشيوخ، اللذان يقومان بجولة مشتركة في الشرق الأوسط، أن على الولايات المتحدة وحلفائها الاعتراف بحكومة مؤقتة تابعة للمعارضة بليبيا وفرض منطقة حظر للطيران تمنع طائرات الزعيم معمر القذافي من مهاجمة المتظاهرين، ومساعدة الحكومة الانتقالية بالأسلحة.
وأعلن ماكين، السيناتور الجمهوري عن ولاية أريزونا ورئيس لجنة الخدمات العسكرية في مجلس الشيوخ وليبرمان السيناتور المستقل عن ولاية كونيكتيكت، إن على الإدارة الأميركية بذل المزيد لمساعدة المحتجين في ليبيا للإطاحة بالقذافي. وقال: «أعتقد أن على العالم بذل المزيد.. يجب البدء بفرض منطقة حظر جوي، كي لا يتمكن القذافي من مهاجمة شعبه جواً».
وأضاف «يجب علينا الاعتراف بالحكومة المؤقتة التابعة للمعارضة كحكومة شرعية لليبيا، وتقديم المساعدة الإنسانية والأسلحة العسكرية لهذه الحكومة، من دون التدخل بأنفسنا على الأرض، لكن منحهم الوسائل للقتال باسم الشعب الليبي ضد الديكتاتور الوحشي (القذافي)».
