قال ابن قدامة المقدسي رحمه الله في (مختصر منهاج القاصدين - ص 156):

((من أراد الوقوف على عيوب نفسه فله في ذلك أربع طُرُق:

الطريقة الأولى:
أن يجلِسَ بين يدي شيخٍ بصيرٍ بٍعُيوبِ النفس يُعَرِّفُه عيوب نفسِه وطُرُقَ علاجها, وهذا قد عزَّ في هذا الزمان وجودُه, فمن وقع به فقد وقعَ بالطبيب الحاذق, فلا ينبغي أن يُفارِقَه.

الطريقة الثانية:
أن يطلُبَ صديقًا صدوقًا بصيرًا متدينا ويُنَصِّبَه رقيبًا على نفسِه لينبِّهه على المكروه من أخلاقِه وأفعاله.
وقد كان أميرُ المؤمنين عمرُ بنُ الخطَّاب رضي الله عنه يقول: ((رحِم الله امرءًا أهدى إلينا عُيوبَنا)).
وقد كان السلف يحبون من ينبههم على عيوبهم, ونحنُ الآن في الغالب أبغضُ الناسِ إلينا من يُعرِّفُنا عيوبَنا.

الطريقة الثالثة:
أن يستفيدَ معرفةَ عيوبِ نفسِه من ألسنةِ أعدائه, فإنَّ عين السُّخط تبدي المساوئ, وانتفاعُ الإنسانِ بعدُوٍّ مُشاجِرٍ يذكُرُ عيوبَه أكثرُ من انتفاعِه بصديقٍ مُداهنٍ يُخفي عنه عيوبه.

الطريقة الرابعة:
أن يُخالِط الناس, فكل ما يراه مذمومًا فيما بينهم يجتنبُه)). اهـ

هذا بعض المفاهيم للفائدة
الرغبة : رجاء خاص

-- الرهبة : وجل خاص / خوف خاص.

-- الخشوع: التطامن والذل، ويكون بالصوت ويكون بالأعمال وهو أنواع العبادات التي يحبها الله.

-- الانابة: حقيقتها الرجوع؛

الإنابة عبادة لا يسوغ أن يرجع إلى غير الله ،

إفراد الإنابة إلى الله.

-- الاستعانة: حقيقتها طلب العون؛

غالب ما يبدأ بـ " ا س ت " يكون طلبا.

لا استعانة إلا بالله

وعبادة غير الله أعظم من الاستعانة بغير الله.

* استغنى: فعل لا طلب؛ إذا كان طلبا كان عبادة ولا يصح إلا لله.

-- الاستعاذة: حقيقتها طلب العوذ ، أعوذ ألتجئ و اعتصم وأتحرز بالله.
من حيث كونها احترازا والتجاءً صارت عبادة قلبية.

* لا يجوز القول: أعوذ بالله ثم بك لأنها عبادة قلبية بحتة.

--الاستغاثة : طلب الغوث والغوث يفسر بأنه الاغاثة ، المدد، النصرة
فإذا وقع أحد في غرق قال: أغثني؛ الاستغاثة عبادة،

الاستغاثة عمل ظاهر يمكن طلبها من مخلوق بشروط:

حي ، حاضر، قادر، يسمع ؛ فلا تجوز الاستغاثة بغائب كالملائكة والجن.
