توفي العداء الكيني، صامويل وانجيرو، بطل سباق الماراتون في أولمبياد بكين 2008، الأحد، متأثراً بجراح أصيب بها إثر قفزه من الطابق الثاني بمنزله في نياهورورو في وسط كينيا.
وقال غاسبر أومباتي، مسؤول في الشرطة في نياهورورو، إن الحادث وقع بعد أن ضبطته زوجته، تريزا جيري، أثناء عودتها المفاجئة من نيروبي حيث تقيم، برفقة امرأة أخرى وقامت بحبسه داخل غرفة النوم.
وأوضح أن المرأتين اقتيدتا للاستجواب في مركز الشرطة، نافياً الاشتباه فيهما بالحادث الذي وقع مساء الأحد.
ويعتبر وانجيرو، 24 عاماً، أصغر عداء نجح في الفوز بأربعة سباقات كبرى للماراثون والتي حصل عليها في بكين عام 2008 ولندن 2009 وشيكاغو 2009 و2010.
كما أنه كان في الحادية والعشرين عندما أصبح اول كيني وأصغر عداء في العالم يحرز لقب الماراثون في الألعاب الاولمبية منذ عام 1932.
وتخيم حالة من الحزن في كينيا على وفاة وانجيرو، الذي كان يعتبر بطلا رياضيا، وقالت هيئة "ألعاب القوى" الكينية إنها علقت الآمال على العداء للفوز بميدالية ذهبية أخرى في أولمبياد لندن المقرر عام 2012.
وأعلن الأمين العام للهيئة، دافود أوكيو: "إنه خلف فراغاً من الصعب ملئه."
وفي السنوات الأخيرة واجه وانجيرو عدداً من المتاعب، منها توجيه تهم بالقتل لزوجته وحيازة سلاح بشكل غير مشروع في ديسمبرالماضي، وأسقطت الزوجة التهم لاحقاً إلا أنه لا يزال يواجه تهم حيازة السلاح.
وأجبر على الانسحاب من ماراثون لندن بعد تورطه في حادث سيارة بكينيا في جانفي الفائت.
