يطفيء تمثال الحرية شمعته الـ 125سنة يوم 28 أكتوبر, 125 سنة هي عمر هذه الهدية الفرنسية والتي أصبحت واحدة من أكثر المعالم شهرة في أمريكا ووجهة للكثير من السياح

صمم النحات الفرنسي فريدريك بارتولدي تمثال " الحرية تضيء العالم " وأزيح الستار عنه لأول مرة كبناء كامل في 28أكتوبر,1886. الكثير من أجزاء لم تظهر قبل البناء النهائي. والصورة هنا خلال عرض رأس التمثال في المعرض العالمي في باريس عام 1878 قبل أن ينتقل الى ماديسون سكوير بارك في مدينة نيويورك

التمثال كان مقررا أن يكون هدية تذكارية بالذكرى المئوية لتأسيس الولايات المتحدة عام 1876 . بعد عدة سنوات من الجدل والمحادثات حوله سافر بارتولدي في أول رحلة له الى الولايات المتحدة عام 1871 آملا في إختيار مكان للتمثال وبالفعل اختار جزيرة بيدلو

واجهت مرحلة بناء التمثال الكثير من الصعوبات السياسية والمالية وقد تم صرف مايزيد عن 250 ألف فرنك لمشروع البناء وبدأ بناءه الكامل في 1881. وقد استشار بارتولدي غوستاف ايفيل حول تصميم الهيكل الصلب واستخدام الحديد. في الصورة تمثال الحرية وقد قارب المهندسين على الإنتهاء منه في باريس 1883

تم تفكيك التمثال وإرساله إلى نيويورك من خلال أكثر من 100 حاوية شحن . وقد وصلت القطع إلى نيويورك في 19 يونيو 1885 وقد استغرق فترة للتركيب قبل اسدال الستار عنه في العام التالي . في الصورة وجه التمثال ينتظر التعليق في 1885

تمثال الحرية سرعان ما أصبح رمز لحرية المهاجرين واللاجئين القادمين إلى أمريكا , لأنه أول شيء يشاهدونه عندما يقتربون إلى أمريكا وذلك بفضل موقع جزيرة بيدلو والتي أعيد تسميتها في العام 1956 إلى جزيرة ليبرتي "الحرية"

خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى أستخدمت الحكومة الفيدرالية صورة التمثال للحفاظ على الحرية بحد زعمهم وذلك من خلال دعم جهود الحرب الأمريكية . وأستخدمت الصور في طلبات التوظيف والإعلانات عن الحرب وحتى على الطوابع

في العام 1938 , تم إغلاق التمثال لمدة ستة أشهر لصيانته وإزالة الصدأ والتجديدات في الهيكل وتعزيز قواعد التمثال . في الصورة عمال يقومون بإزالة المسامير من التاج

في عام 1972 الرئيس نكسون أفتتح المتحف الأمريكي للهجرة في قاعدة تمثال الحرية قبل أن يغلق المتحف في عام 1991 بسبب قلة التمويل حسب ماذكر

في عهد الرئيس رونالد ريغان أقيمت دراسة على التمثال ووجدت أن الذراع الأيمن تعلق بشكل غير صحيح وقد سببت الكثير من الأضرار على التمثال . في الصورة عمال يقومون بالعمل على الشعلة التي استبدلت بأخرى طبق الأصل

تم إعادة فتح التمثال في يوم الاستقلال عام 1986 , وظهرت الكثير من التحسينات مثل الإضاءة التي سلطت الضوء على التمثال وترميم المدخل وتركيب مصعد للزوارالمعاقين . في الصورة نانسي ريغان خلال حفل إعادة افتتاح التمثال

بعد هجمات 11 سبتمبرعلى مركز التجارة العالمي تم إغلاق تمثال الحرية أمام الزوار, وذلك بسبب مخاوف أمنية, وليس فقط التمثال بل حتى جزيرة ليبرتي قبل أن يسمح بالوصول إليها أواخر العام 2001, وتم إعادة فتح قاعدة التمثال في عام 2004 والتمثال الكامل في عام 2009

اليوم 28 اكتوبر2011 هو اليوم الأخير لزيارة تمثال الحرية قبل أن يغلق لمدة سنة كاملة . بمناسبة الـ 125 سنة سوف يكون هناك تطوير وتجديد وصيانة للتمثال وسوف تضاف أنظمة تكنولوجية وكهربائية ومقاومة حريق وتحديث للسلالم والمصاعد بتكاليف تصل إلى 27 مليون دولار. ومن المقرر أن يعاد فتح التمثال مرة أخرى للجمهور في أكتوبر 2012
