هى واحدة من كوكبة جزر تتكون من 99 جزيرة حيث أنها أكبر هذه الجزر وتقع الجزيرة فى الشمال الغربى من شبه مملكة ماليزيا على بعد 112 كم تقريبا من جزيرة بينانج كما تقع الجزيرة بالقرب من تايلاند ، اذ يمكنك مشاهدة الشواطئ التايلندية أثناء المرور حول الجزيرة فى رحلة بحرية ، وعاصمة الجزيرة هى مدينة كواه ، وهى الميناء الذى يرسو عليه عادة القادمين للجزيرة عن طريق البحر سواء من بينانج بالفيرى أو من سنغافورة على متن الباخرة ستار كروز كما يوجد مطار دولى بالجزيرة يصل الجزيرة برحلات منتظمة ومباشرة بين تايلاند واندونيسيا وسنغافورة وهونج كونج ، وتعتبر كواه هى أكبر المدن على الجزيرة ، كما أنها أصبحت مركزا هاما للمال والأعماال حيث تشتهر بوجود فنادق ومحلات تجارية كثيرة بها العديد من السلع والبضائع ، والمعروف أن جزيرة لنكاوى هى عبارة عن منطقة حرة ولا رسوم جمركية على أى شئ فيها مما يجعلها مكانا رائعا للتسوق ، وتشتهر الجزيرة بالهدوء وتتميز بوجود مجموعة كبيرة من الكهوف وحقول الأرز المنتشرة فى الجزيرة ، مما جعلها محفلا خصبا للأساطير والحكايات ، ومن هذه الأساطير يقولون أنه قبل 2000 سنة كانت هناك فتاة أسمها ماهسورى اتهمت بالزنى ظلما ، فلما قتلوها تدفق من جسمها دم أبيض ، ووضعت لعنة على الجزيرة لمدة 7 أجيال ، وما زال مقام ماهسورى حتى اليوم يأتى اليه الناس من كل صوب وحدب ، حقيقة أم خيال ، فأن اللعنة بدأت تتحقق على أرض الجزيرة بمجرد قتل ماهسورى ، فقد غزا جنود من سيام الجزيرة وأجبروا الأهالى على حرق حقول الأرز ، وتوجد فى الجزيرة الكثير من الفنادق الفخمة مثل بلانجى بيتش وشيراتون لنكاوى وشيراتون بردانا وداتاى وغيرهم ، ومعظم الفنادق المطلة على البحر هى عبارة عن أكواخ بأعلى درجة من الرفاهية والراحة ومعظمها مطل على البحر مباشرة ، كما تتوفر وسائل النقل فى الجزيرة ووسيلة النقل الرئيسية هى السيارات وأسعارها معقولة ومتوفرة ، وأهم ما يميز الجزيرة هى امكانية القيام برحلات بحرية منظمة لزيارة باقى الجزر المحيطة بها
