في 1511 ، فرضت إسبانيا على سكان مستغانم معاهدة إلا أنهم رفضوا قبولها. إلى أن جاء الأتراك العثمانيون في 1516 وطردوا الاسبان. ومنذ ذلك الحين، تزايدت أهمية وهران (المنافسة التقليدية لمستغانم آنذاك) للمحتلين الاسبان، وقالت انها ترى أهمية المتزايدة. وبعد عدة سنوات من المقاومة، وجهوا نداء استنجاد الى خير الدين بربروس الذي ساعدهم على إلحاق هزيمة ساحقة بالإسبان في معركة مزغرانmazaghran (أغسطس 1558). مستغانم انضوت في الدولة العثمانية، حيث قام خير الدين بربروس بتوسيعها وتقوية تحصيناتها.

حاول حكام قشتالة إخضاع مستغانم للتاج الملكي بمباركة من الكنيسة الكاثوليكية في أكثر من حملة عسكرية منظمة انطلاقا من وهران مستغلين وفاة خير الدين بإسطنبول سنة 1547م لكن ابنه محمد حسن باشا اظهر براعته في القتال بسهل أغبال أسفل السبخة المالحة جنوب وهران( المالح ) لم يكن انسحاب حسن باشا من الميدان هزيمة بل نتيجة الفاجعة التي حلت بأسرته عند بلاغ خبر وفاة والده فاهتم هذا القائد بتحصين مستغانم ومزغران ، وعمل على استتباب الأمن والاستقرار في أوساط عرب وبربر وكرا غلة المنطقة وضواحيهما واستمر في مراقبته لتحركات الأسبان المرابطين في وهران ،فبانسحاب حسن باشا من سهل أغبال اعتقد حاكم وهران الكونت دي ألكوديت المرابط بجيشه بالقرب من عين تموشنت أن ذلك الانسحاب ماهو إلا فشل ذريع وفي الثالث والعشرين من شهر أوت سنة 1558م جهز ألكوديت حملة عسكرية لإحلال مزغران حين نزلت قواته بشاطي سيدي منصور وتقدمت نحو المدينة المرتفعة والمحصنة بأسوارها فصمد أهاليها رفقة جيش الحامية التي أنشأها حسن باشا كما شارك في القتال ولي الله الصالح سيدي لخضر بن خلوف المكنى لكحل الذي يصف المعركة الشرسة في إحدى قصائده وهذه أبيات منها :

كـي فـزعنا صبنا صبنيول صايلين ـــ في وسطنا درناهم لسيف والطراد

عند سيدي منصور ضحاو هاربين ـــ ثم دورنا بيهم بالقوس والزنــــــاد

ولما غربت شمس اليوم الثاني حتى كان النصر حليف سكان المنطقة الذين أبلوا البلاء الحسن ، وأودوا بحياة أكثر من9000جندي اسباني وعلى رأسهم الكونت دي ألكوديت إلى جانب ما يزيد عن 9000آخرين منهزمين فارين من المعركة الشرسة يجرون ذيول الخيبة مثلما يشيرا لشاعر سيدي لخضر بن خلوف

حــزنــاهم للــصــور ذاك اليــوم تـسع آلاف بقـــــات مــغـــنـــومة

من حيط الدشرة لحوض الدوم تسع آلاف مســــــــات محطــومة

كبندو الكلب اليوم راسو طــار والرقبــــة من الجسـد مقطــوعة

ضربو شاطر حاط بالمطيــــار يلغا لو بصــوات مــــــنــــــزوعة

و المدرع في الحين صار شطار والشيعة بالســـيــــف مقلــــوعة

و مشى الشارب كله مقســـوم و السنـــة بالخبط مفـــــــــرومة

دومارتيل من البكــا مهمـــــوم قال لحقـــوا وبــــادروا للمـــــــاء

في عنقه لحبال مشى محزوم ويتعشـــــاوه ذياب للفــــرمـــــة

كما يواصل الشاعر الذي عايش الواقعة قائلا:

وين صحاب الكونت بو لسنان ويـــن نصــــــارة الجسيســـــا

وين القساسين و الرهبان اللي يعبـــدوا سيدنا عيســـــــا

حاشا روح ربنا الرحمان يتـــمثــل مـن قـــوم منجوسـة

ماهو من فرسان ذاك القوم لازادوا ظــلام على الظــلمـــة

ترجاه الإسلام لن يقوم خيـــر الدين يساــير الأمـــــــة

يا سايلني عن طراد الروم قصة مزغــــــران معلومـــــة

طل على الكفار يوم السبت خرجولك من باب مزغران

إلى غرب السور كانوا زفت ولا الدود طلاو بالقطــــــران

احلف لهم سلطانا وثبت خذا العاهد شروط بالأمــــــان

ذا الأتراك مجندة للروم فزعت الكفار ملمومـــــــــــــة

حنا قالوا قماح جينا اليوم و تهدت خرفان محطومـــــــــة

ياسايلني على طراد الروم قصة مزغران معلومــــــــــــة

اللي حضروا جاهدوا ومشا وا و البعض من الناس ماحضروش

و إلي طاحوا في الحفير بقاوا كثرة ذوك الناس ماصبروش

و اللي جاواصباح يتمشاوا ما صابوا في السوق ما يشروش

لا مسلك للباب لا سلوم لا هتفة في السور لا فرمـــــة

سور ابيض بشرايفو محكوم حايل بين الصيد و المرمــــى

يا سايلني على طراد الروم قصة مزغران معلومــــــــة

وبمقتل الكونت دي آلكوديت لم يجد ابنه مارتيناز بدا سوى طلب جثته والده ، فاستجاب حسن باشا وجهز مركبة ترافقها أخرى لنقل تابوت القائد الإسباني إلى ميناء وهران، فعل إنساني يليق بمقام وصايا الدين المحدي.
