خلفت عملية هدم المنزل الذي أقام فيه البطل الشهيد، العربي بن مهيدي، وسط بسكرة، استياء كبيرا لدى الوسط الشعبي بالمدينة، وصار هذا الفعل محور حديث الطبقة المثقفة، والمهتمة بتاريخ الثورة التحريرية التي أثمرت نصرا، يحتفل به الجزائريون كل عام.

الفئة المستاءة أبدت تأسفا شديدا على ما حصل، محملة السلطات المعنية وزر غضها الطرف عن هذا المعلم وإهماله، ما حتم على مالكه هدمه لبناء سكن هو بحاجة إليه. علما بأنه انتظر طويلا تدخل السلطات للمحافظة علية، عبر عمليات ترميم دورية تحفظه من الانهيار. تاريخ بناء المسكن يعود إلى سنة 1870 غير أن ملكيته لصاحبه الحالي تعود إلى سنة 1930، وبعد عشر سنوات استاجرته عائلة بن مهيدي المنحدرة من عين مليلة، وفيه تربى وترعرع الابن العربي طالبا ومناضلا لمدة 8 سنوات، وبعيد الاستقلال بقي المنزل رمزا شاهدا على بطولة الشهيد بن مهيدي، الذي دوخ بيجار ومن يأتمرون بأوامره من كبار الضباط الفرنسيين، وتشير إلى ذلك لوحة تذكارية على جدار المنزل، قبل أن تأتي عليها آلة الهدم، وتغرقها هي الأخرى بين الردوم. وهو ما استاء له المواطنون مع احترامهم لحق صاحب العقار في ملكيته الخاصة.
