شجرة كبيرة مستديمة الخضرة سريعة النمو ذات جذع قائم النمو ، تفضل الشجرة العيش في المناطق الاستوائية وتفضل الصيف الحار الجاف ، ويصل ارتفاعها 21- 36 م
تعيش الشجرة تحت الاضاءة المباشرة للشمس والري يكون معتدلا وهي تعتبر من اللاشجار المقاومة للجفاف، والتربة يجب ان تكون نعامة الحبيبات وجيدة الصرف متعادلة الحموضة الى حمضية

وهي ذات اوراق مركبة ريشية ، الجزء الأعلى من الورقة أخضر اللون و الجزء السفلي يتميز بلونه الأبيض المغبر، اما الأزهار فهي برتقالية ذهبية ذات شكل مميز ذات عرض 3 سم و طولها 8 - 15 سم ومعد الازهار في أواخر الربيع
اما بالنسبة للثمار فهي مسودة اللون جلدية الملمس يصل طولها الى 2 سم وتحتوي على 1 - 2 بذرة، تتكاثر بواسطة البذور مفلطحة مجنحة الشكل، يفضل نقعها في ماء بارد لمدة 24 ساعة لتسريع عملية الانبات و التي تصل ل 90% ، تمتد مدة الانبات من اسبوع الى خمسة اسابيع من الزراعة

لبنان وشجرة الأرز "المقدسة" صنوان لا ينفصلان, فإذا ذُكر لبنان ذُكرت شجرة الأرز, فهي رمز للبنان تزين شعاره وتتوسط علمه الوطني. ولبنان أعطاها الاسم العلمي (الأرز اللبناني Cedrus libani) إذ أن موطنها الأصلي هو لبنان وشمال سورية وجنوب شرقي تركيا. وهي شجرة نادرة لا تنمو إلاّ في هذه المنطقة والمناطق المتاخمة لها مثل حاجي عمران في شمال العراق. وقد باءت جميع محاولات نشر زراعتها في مناطق أخرى بالفشل بسبب متطلباتها البيئية التي لا تتوافر إلاّ في مثل هذه المناطق, فهي تحتاج إلى شتاء بارد تسقط فيه أمطار وثلوج كثيرة, وإلى صيف معتدل الحرارة, وإلى مناطق فيها كثير من ضوء الشمس. فأشجار الأرز تنمو في السفوح الشمالية الغربية لجبال وهضاب مناطق انتشارها الأصلية التي ذكرت, وفي هذه السفوح المتجهة نحو مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط التي تعكس أشعة الشمس, وفي الوقت نفسه تكون الحرارة معتدلة صيفاً بسبب ارتفاع الجبال, وتصل معدلات سقوط الأمطار والثلوج في مناطق تواجدها الحالي في لبنان إلى 1000 ملم سنوياً.


وشجرة الأرز دائمة الخضرة معمرة, جميلة, ضخمة وباسقة يصل ارتفاعها إلى 40 متراً. بطيئة النمو وتعمر كثيراً, إذ وصل عمر بعض أشجار الأرز البالغة والعتيقة إلى الألف عام. وسبب ذلك يعود إلى مقاومة سيقانها وأوراقها الحشرات والأمراض الفطرية.
