أعلن مسؤولون في وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية "ناسا" أن نيزك هائم في الفضاء سيمر بالقرب من الأرض في وقت لاحق الجمعة، إلا أنهم استبعدوا أن يشكل النيزك، الذي يقترب حجمه من حجم حافلة مدرسية، أي خطر على كوكب الأرض.
وقال علماء ناسا إن النيزك الصخري العملاق، الذي يُطلق عليه اسم "Asteroid 2012 BX34"، سيمر على مسافة قريبة من الأرض، تبلغ حوالي 36 ألف و750 ميل، ما يعادل نحو 60 ألف كيلومتر، وتعادل هذه المسافة أكثر من خمس المسافة بين الأرض والقمر، أي حوالي 0.17 في المائة.
وذكر مركز مراقبة النيازك، الذي يديره مختبر الدفع النفاث التابع لوكالة ناسا، في "باسادينا" بولاية كاليفورنيا، على موقع "تويتر"، أن النيزك الذي تبلغ مساحته حوالي 37 قدماً، "لن يستطع أن يخترق مجالنا الجوي، حتى وإن تجرأ على محاولة ذلك."

أذاعت قناة روسيا اليوم، فيديو يظهر سقوط نيزك مصحوب بشهب عديدة على مقاطعة ''تشيليابينسك'' الروسية.
وقالت ''روسيا اليوم'' على موقعها الالكتروني، الجمعة، إنه لا توجد معطيات عن سقوط ضحايا بشرية، ولكن المعلومات تشير إلى أن حوالي 1000 شخص قصدوا المستشفيات العامة لتلقي العلاج من إصابات نتجت عن تحطم النوافذ الزجاجية ببعض المباني القريبة من منطقة السقوط.

وأوضحت القناة الروسية أن عدد المباني المتضررة من سقوط النيزك زهاء تبلغ 3 آلاف مبنى.
ونقلت ''روسيا اليوم'' عن مصدر في الأجهزة الأمنية في المقاطعة، ان ارتطام النيزك بسطح الأرض بقوة، أدى إلى تألق الشعاع في السماء، وتحطم زجاج نوافذ بعض المباني القريبة.
وأضاف ''أنه لم تقع أي كارثة جوية كما أشاع بعض شهود العيان، وبموجب المعطيات الأولية، فإن سقوط النيزك تخلله سطوع نور، وهناك معلومات تفيد بأن إحتراق النيزك وتفتته وقع على ارتفاع 10 آلاف متر، وتجري التحقيقات للتأكد من صحتها".
وبحسب المصدر فقد " أدى الحادث إلى تحطم زجاج نوافذ بعض المنازل في القرى والبلدات القريبة، دون وقوع ضحايا بشرية أو تدمير المباني والمنشآت".
كما نقل موقع القناة عن علماء قولهم، إن النيزك الذي سقط في مقاطعة تشيليابينسك صغير جداً من حيث حجمه وطاقته، قياساً بنيزك تونغونسك الذي سقط عام 1908 في حوض نهر تونغوسكا في شرق سيبيريا الذي تراوحت قوته بموجب حسابات مختلفة بين 10 و40 ميغاطن من مادة التروتيل الشديدة الانفجار. أما النيزك الذي سقط اليوم فقوته أقل من ذلك بكثير.
وحسب المؤشرات، فإن النيزك الذي سقط في أراضي مقاطعة تشيليابينسك هو حجري او حجري – حديدي، وبعد ان حلق فوق المواقع السكنية، سقط في بحيرة تشيباركول على بعد كيلومتر واحد من المدينة التي تحمل الاسم نفسه.
وحسب رأي العلماء، فإن هذا النيزك هو جرم سماوي وكتلته عدة أطنان، ولقد تحطم في المجال الجوي مكوناً سحابة من القطع شكلت في أثناء طيرانها موجة ضاربة واشعاعات، مما أدى إلى ظهور الضوء الساطع وتحطم زجاج النوافذ، وأن الجزء الأكبر من مكوناته قد تبخر أما الباقي فسقط على الأرض، ولا توجد أي معطيات دقيقة عن اكتشاف قطع منه حتى الآن.
