خاطبه شيخ المنارة...رويدك...رويدك يا اخ العرب اتريدان تقضي علي ما تبقي من ارثك.
ان كنت جائعا ساقدم لك طعاما...واذا كنت منهوك القوي...ستجد عندي الراحة.
اجلس هنا...سااتي لك بطعام لم تذقه من قبل.
ذهب شيخ المنارة لمطبخه...وعاد بطعام الثاني غريب الاطوار.
اكل الاعراجي حتي قتل الجوع الذي حل به...اخرج نايه واعطي العنان لالحانه البدويةالعرجاءمن دون وزن...قطع عزف سنفونيته البدائية...وارخي جسمه ليستريح من ويلات سفره...بدات طاحونة افكاره تجتر صور من الماضي القريب...اين الاهل...اين حماره وكلبه و ماشيته...لقد فعلت العاصفة فعلتها الشنيعة وتركته وحيدا... وها هي الاقدار تجمعه بديكه الهارب ثانية... وينزل ضيفا علي شيخ المنارة.
بدا النعاس يلعب بعينيه من شدة التعب والارهاق...راسه صارت ثقيلة جدا...تتمايل يمنة و يسرة ثم تعاود مكانها...ثم خر ارضا نائما.
الديك يحوم حول صاحبه الاعراجي متعجبا...كيف ان النوم غلب عقله الفارغ الجاف.
اسطوانةالشخير ارتفع صوتها...تقزز الديك من سماع هذه الاغنية القديمة المزعجة.
سافر الاعراجي في دنياالنوم والاحلام...واذا به يقف على تخوم بغداد المدمرة بضربات المغول...الذى لم يترك لا يابس ولا اخضر الا وتركه في خبر كان ...حتي الكتب لم تسلم من النيران المشتعلة...وجعل منها جسورا لمرور جيشه الهمجي.
المنام ياخذه الى وسط عائلته...يضحك مع ابنه...ثم يكشر فى وجه زوجته...ثم يركب فوق حماره...سائقا قطيعه...تتلاشى الصور الرمادية... وسط غباركثيف ... تتضح الصورة من جديد... انسان عملاق نصفه الاسفل حيوان ...يجرى خلفه....
رجلاه لا تقدران على حمله ...او الجرى به بعيدا بعيدا... يلتفت فلا يجد له اثرا.
صاح الديك معلنا فجر يوم جديد...واذا بالاعراجي يستيقظ متقطع الانفاس من كوابيس ليلته...يفتح عيناه الثقيلتان...النوم مزال مسيطرا عليه.
بقي مستلقيا يلتمس اعصائه...رجله العرجاء...يفكر فى حاله...كانه نام دهرا طويلا.
قام ليتوضا...فوجد شيخ المنارة مستيقضا يقرا ما تيسر من القران.
اديا صلاه الصبح جماعة...ثم اشرقت شمس يوم جديد...واصبحت المنارةيقطنها ديك وشخصين.
