تم يوم السبت الموافق 25 مايو 2013 بمقر الاتحاد الأفريقي بالعاصمة الأثيوبية أديس أبابا وعلى هامش القمة الاستثنائية لقادة دول وحكومات الاتحاد ألإفريقي واحتفالا بالذكرى الـ50 لتأسيس منظمة الوحدة الإفريقية "الاتحاد الإفريقية"تم تكريم الملك محمد إدريس السنوسي ملك المملكة الليبية باعتباره أحد الآباء المؤسسين لمنظمة الوحدة الإفريقية التي انطلقت في العام 1963 وقد تم بهذه المناسبة وضع صورته بمكان بارز بمبنى الاتحاد الأفريقي ويأتي هذا التكريم اعترافاً من الشعوب الأفريقية بالدور الهام الذي لعبه الملك الراحل في بعث هذه المنظمة في الوقت الذي كانت تاني أغلب الدول الإفريقية من الاستعمار ودوره في إرساء دعائم الوحدة بين شعوب القارة والتي توجت بتحررها من كافة أشكال الاستعمار .

كما تم تكريم شيخ المجاهدين البطل عمر المختار باعتباره أحد المجاهدين والمناضلين الأفارقة اللذين أخذوا على عاتقهم مقارعة الاستعمار وبذلوا حياتهم في سبيل حرية الشعوب الأفريقية وما مثله هذا المجاهد الفذ من نبراس اهتدى به الكثير من المناضلين في جميع مناطق العالم في تحرير شعوبهم والذود عنها فأضحى رمزاً للتضحية والفداء .
