منقول عن الجاحظ : كتاب الحيوان

زعم محمد بن الجهم ان العيون التي تضيء في الليل كانها مصابيح هي : عيون الاسود والنمور والسنانير والافاعي وقال بينما نحن عنده اذ دخل عليه بعض من يجلب الافاعي من سجستان * ويستخرج منها الترياقات ويبيعها فقال له : حدثهم بالذي حدثتني به عن عين الافعى . فقال :
كنت في منزلي نائما في ظلمة وقد كنت جمعت رؤوس افاع كن عندي لارمي بها واغفلت تحت السرير راسا واحدا ففتحت عيني اتجاه السرير الذي في الظلمة فرايت ضياء الا انه ضئيل ضعيف دقيق فقلت " عين غول او بعض اولاد السعالى وذهبت نفسي في الوان المعاني فقمت وقدحت نارا واخذت المصباح معي ومضيت نحو السرير فلم اجد تحته الا راس افعى فاطفات السراج ونمت وفتحت عيني فاذا بذلك الضوء على حاله فنهضت وصنعت كصنيعي الاول حتى فعلت ذلك مرارا ، فقلت لا شيء هنا سوى راس الافعى فلو نحيته ! فنحيته خارج الغرفة واطفات السراج ثم رجعت الى منامي وفتحت عيني فلم ار شيئا سوى الظلمة الحالكة فعلمت انه من راس الافعى وعندما سالت اهل المهنة عن ذلك قالولي ان الامر حق وهو مشهور عند اهل الصناعة وان عيون الافاعي تضيء في الظلام !!!
