      . Adjectif

      dur, solide (opp. soft) comparatif: harder, superlatif: hardest

      Diamonds are very hard and the graphite in a pencil is very soft.

      A hard disk is a magnetic disk on which you can store computer data.

       . Adverbe

       l'adverbe correspondant à l'adjectif 'hard' est hard et non hardly qui a une autre signification

      To work hard (travailler dur) To try hard faire beaucoup d'efforts

      It is raining very hard il pleut à verse

      remarque: comme 'hard' low, high et fast peuvent être utilisés comme adjectif ou comme adverbe.

      HARDLY

      Adverbe: guère, à peine

      We hardly know each other nous nous connaissons à peine

      I can hardly believe it je le crois à peine

      remarques:

      a) hardly se place devant le verbe principal

      I can hardly believe it et non I hardly can believe it

      b) hardly ayant un sens négatif il ne peut être employé avec une négation.

      on dira: 'hardly ever' (presque jamais) et non 'hardly never'

      'There is hardly any milk left' (il ne reste presque plus de lait) et non

      'There is hardly no milk left'

      Hardly anybody came to the party

      c) on dit: Sue had hardly got into the house when the phone rang.

      mais si la phrase commence par 'hardly', comme avec tous les autres

      adverbes négatifs, il faut intervertir le sujet et l'auxiliaire.

      Hardly had Sue got into the house...

      remarques valables pour 'scarcely' et 'barely' qui ont des sens voisins.

      (Tom hardly works) (Tom ne travaille guère)
