The observation of space has always attracted human beings. In the far past, it was done first out of curiosity and amazement because of the fascinating effect that the celestial bodies exert on our minds. Then the birth of the first civilizations directed the study of celestial bodies towards practical aims. The Babylonians next to the Egyptians as well the Chinese and the Greeks watched the sky in a more systematic way during centuries and were therefore able to draw important benefits from their findings in many fields such as agriculture, traveling, geographical exploration and astrology.
But for a long time the knowledge that people had about the astronomical branch was unimportant and inaccurate because of the lack of appropriate instruments and the absence of reliable techniques to carry out the complex investigations that the subject requires. Today, the high level of technology that scientists handle in their studies make them achieve great progress. Countless facts about stars and planets are gradually collected _while_ numerous details about galaxies, their size, their origin and their composition get carefully analyzed and compared7Actually, the understanding that specialists acquire about all these elements widens almost daily and numerous secrets unknown before about the universe get unveiled slowly.
