For me is the most beautiful city in the world, it is the city where I was born and where I live now; and its name is Constantine. It is known as the Bridges’ City because there are seven in it the most important of them are Sidi Rached, Sidi M’sid and Sidi el Mellah. It is the City of science and scientists as it is the place of birth of the great thinker Ben Badis, and also the city of the Old Rock because Constantine is built on a big one. This city is really a fabulous mixture of geography, history, culture, tradition and customs.
Constantine is one of the 48 Provinces of Algeria, whose capital is the city of the same name. Regarded as the capital of eastern Algeria, it has a population of over 891,668 making it the third largest city in the country (after Algiers and Oran). Its population is for a total area of 2,297.2 km². The wilaya is made up of 6 daïras and 12 communes. Constantine is situated in the East of Algeria it is an inland city but it has the Rhumel River which crosses it and divides the old city and its name is Souika from the new one. Because of its strategic site and special relieves, Constantine has seen the succession and the settlement of many civilizations; Phoenicians lived in it and called it Cirta then came the Romans who named it Constantine according to their Emperor Constantin and finally the Arabic civilization and its name was translated to kasantina. Without forgetting the French colonization and the bravery of the citizens in fighting the enemy beginning with Ahmed Bey and ending with Didouche Mourad. Constantine is famous for its Malouf music and its great singer Hadj Mohamed Taher Ferguani. Madjboud or Fetla is the traditional cloth in Constantine very elegant and expensive but every bride must take this dress with her in her Chora and things made of copper or brass which is the most spread kind of handy craft. During the religious feasts Constantine celebrates them as the other cities in Algeria but it has its proper rituals, in Achoura for example the Constantine habitants buy Kachekcha and it is a mix of candies, dried fig, dates andnuts. In Mouloud we celebrate differently the birthday of our prophetprayer and peace of Allah on him; we lightthe candles, and play with Fireworks. For its celebrations Constantine prepares its delicious dishes like Couscous, Chekhchoukha, Chebah el sefra, Refis and many other yummy recipes and its irresistible cakes; Makroud, Baklaoua, ktaïf, ect. When you mention Constantine, the person in front of you thinks automatically of the deep-rootednessand its conservative people but very hospital. It is true that, Constantine has known many changes during the years but unfortunately not all are good ones and I hope that in the closest future this marvellous city will get back its reputation as the Capital of the East. |
