A true Friend
A true Friend In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day one fellow met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?". "Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test.". "Triple filter?". "That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and...". "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?" . "No, on the contrary...". "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?" "No, not really." "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?" What is the lesson of this story? I think the test is about truth even though it involves friendship somehow, it's about avoiding doubt before making any statement or judgment, you are only assuming that his friend ( socrates ) is worth the friendship, however Socrates wanted to stop the other person short in order to remind him that before saying anything he should take into account
1. the truth 2. goodness 3.and finally whether it's useful or not basically even if it's not true, Socrates would still listen to him as it might be good or useful, but because none of it was relevant, Socrates stopped him short in order not to waste his time, not because of his friend the general rule is that if something isn't true nor good or useful, then what is it for? |

that's right be a true friend involves being a faithful friend and keep the friendship when your friend is absent اقتباس:
the story talk about friendship because the fellow is going to tell to Socrate what he had heard about his friend: One day one fellow met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?" but before telling him any thing, Socrate would to pass him triple test" Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say" ,not because he thought to waste his time in the contrary he was afraid to loose his friend by a false, and neither good nor useful somthing about his friend |

I don't agree with you, he wasn't afraid of losing a friend, he made sure to get the truth, and not to be drawn in a kind of misleading stories, regardless what kind of friend he has, this is the point, otherwise he could have just stopped him from telling anything about his friend, whether it was true or not, otherwise what's the point in having a bad friend? what would you like to know about your friends? don't you want to know the truth? about them? so that you know who you're dealing with...so i think this is the point

yes salimnina u are right im agree withe u now becaus im forget this point yesterday
thnx a lot |

to add to the point, if Socrates wanted to keep his friend at any cost, he could have just said: " stop, this is my friend and i don't want to hear anything about him, he is a good friend and I don't want to lose him"
this is the point, the points raised are truth, usefulness and goodness and this is why Socrates made the tests based on, I hope this clarifies the matter |
