Eating is one of the most important events in everyone’s life. We enjoy eating, it’s a part of who we are and a part of our culture; in fact, eating is the hottest universal topic of all times. We depend on eating: the foods we eat are the sole source of our energy and nutrition. We know so much about eating: we are born with the desire to eat and grown up with rich traditions of eating. But we also know so little about eating, about how the foods we eat everyday affect our health. We are more confused than ever about the link between diet and health: margarine is healthier than butter or not; a little alcohol will keep heart attacks at bay but causes breast cancer; dietary vitamin antioxidants can prevent lung cancer or can not. Eating is a paradox and a mystery that our ancestors tried and modern scientists are trying to solve. Based on experiences and traditions, our ancestors have used foods and plant materials to treat various kinds of illnesses. Manuscripts discovered from a tomb (Dated 168 B.C) in China described prescriptions for 52 aliments with herbs, grains, legumes, vegetables, animal parts, and minerals. Ancient Sumerians recorded the use of 250 medicinal plants on tablets five thousand years ago. Today, plant and food remedies are still the major medicinal source for 80% of the world’s population. www.megaessays.com A. COMPREHENSION (08pts) 1. READING (15points)ÇáãæÖæÚ ÇáËÇäí The planet that is closest to the Sun is Mercury. It is about 36 million-miles from the Sun and its period of revolution is 88 days. Mercury is surprisingly dense, apparently because it has an unusually iron core. With only a transient atmosphere, Mercury has a surface that still bears the record of bombardment by steroidal bodies early in its history. Mercury passes through phases similar to those of the moon as it completes each revolution around the Sun. It has such a thin atmosphere that in a single day it reaches temperatures of up to 750*F. At night, it gets as cold as -300*F. This planet can only be seen for a short time before or after sunset. Mercury is the second smallest planet in the solar system, having a diameter of about 3,000 miles. Its mean density can be compared to the earth. Its small mass and proximity to the Sun prevent it from having an appreciable atmosphere. The surface of Mercury is like that of the moon. WWW.NASA.org A.COMPREHENSION (7 points) 1. It’s a very ancient method of curing illnesses that refers to the existence of humankind on earth. The Pharaohs were the first in this domain. In my opinion, using herbs as medicines is 100% natural thus, safer than chemical drugs. Because herbal remedies include natural elements only, such as: herbs, grains and other earth fruits without conservatives or strange additives as chemical matters which may cause kidney cancer or other undesirable effects. In addition to the fact that almost new generations of drugs are fake and don’t contain active ingredients this is why they neither cure nor kill. Both of diet and health are related to good and balanced nutrition that we get only from earth (nature). Plant medicines have great effects on people’s health. For example: In the East of Asia, it is so common (this kind of cure) and it has shown great results especially on organic illnesses and skin diseases. It is guaranteed if it is used by specialists. Many people don’t believe in the impact of herbs, but it really keeps the energy balance of the body thanks to the magical power that mother nature has; for example instead of taking head-ache pills, drink a cup of warm mint it’s an effective way to calm down and sleep deeply. Unfortunately, because of the fast change, man is more confused than ever about whether to use this traditional cure or try the most modern and the quickest way which is chemical drugs and it may also, have side deadly effects. SOULI NousseibaÇáÊáãíÐÉ Topic2: Food safety is one of the hottest universal topics of modern times. Despite the great progress in science and medicine, food poisoning threatens lives of consumers especially in summer. I think that consumers generally don’t care about food safety because it is a whole culture. They care more about money than about their health although manufactured foods can be as dangerous as poison. This is why we should give much importance to the label on the cans or packages such as the expiry date, ingredients, and additives. In addition, if the product is made by children I prefer not to buy it because I know how these children are exploited and how little they are paid. As it is said: “health is better than wealth”, so we had better take care of his health and diet. So, one had better look after his health by improving his eating habits. :13::13::13ÏÚæÇÊßã æÝÞßã Çááå:7: |

Level : 3rd year/SCientific streams Soledj Said Secondary School First Term Exam PART ONE. Reading A. Comprehension and Interpretation. (8pts) One of my students unsuccessfully tried to explain to me today why cheating is and should be acceptable in China. She told me that cheating is often the only way to succeed academically in this overpopulated country. She admitted to me that she has tried to cheat multiple times but has always failed because of increased "security." She was not bashful about telling me, however, that she had often cheated on exams in high school. The Chinese government in recent years has taken extra measures to prevent cheating. Cell phone blocking devices have been placed in schools to prevent wireless communication and police officers may provide security for important events such as entrance exams. But even these extreme measures do not stop students from trying to cheat. A teacher who is familiar with the testing system in China told me that sophisticated hand signals and tapings are used to communicate during exams. Perhaps the reason why cheating continues to be prevalent in China is because of the attitudes of students. Cheating is not necessarily seen in China as a moral issue; it is a matter of survival. Scores on an exam can mean the difference between going to a well known university in a big city or being relegated to a small college in the countryside. And going to a well known university or a small college can mean the difference between working and moving up in a large company or being stuck in mediocre low paying jobs one's whole life. In other words, cheating could make the difference between a comfortable life and a life full of struggle. When facing that choice, many are willing to make the wrong choice. 1.
