Muslim women hide from racist taunts
MOST Victorians say they hold a mainly positive view of Muslims, but Muslim women are reporting a pattern of sustained racism towards them, a study has found.
Seven years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Muslim women in Victoria continue to report racial abuse and discrimination "in an environment characterised by incivility and inhospitality", the report by the Islamic Women's Welfare Council of Victoria found.
African Muslim women and Muslims who wear hijabs experience more racism than other Muslim women, says the report. And while verbal abuse is the most common form of racism, the report also documents incidents of physical assault.
"I was walking and a car … tried to run me over. (It) … came up on to the footpath. When … I ran into a pub, they started yelling, "F--- Muslims, f--- blacks, go back to your country'," a Lebanese woman reported.

"My mother (was) at Flinders Station (when a) man yelled, 'You terrorist' … and hit her on the head and pulled her hijab," said an African woman.
The report sought to gauge racism and anti-Muslim sentiment experienced by Victorian Muslim women after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack and the impact it has had on their lives.
Researchers spoke to 302 Victorian Muslim women in focus groups between 2003 and and 2007. The study also includes a telephone survey of 600 non-Muslim Victorians in July 2005.
The report found "women from the Horn of Africa were over-represented as victims of racism, and in many instances women were attacked about their 'blackness', as distinct from their religion or culture or association to Islam".
Muslim women's safety fears eroded their participation in, and sense of belonging to, Australian society, it said.
But the report also found that most non-Muslim Victorians surveyed (62.3 per cent) held a positive view of Muslims. About 10 per cent held negative views, while the remainder were undecided.
Positive views were attributed to a belief that all people should be treated equally, a perception that Muslims had "done nothing wrong to them" and experiencing personal and working relationships with Muslim women.
Negative views were attributed to perceptions of a negative portrayal of Muslims in the media and associations of Muslims with war and terrorism. The report says: "Six years after the terrorist attacks against America and five years after Bali terrorist violence, Muslim women are still spending time at home with their children 'hiding'."
"Their basic right to live in safety, to have freedom of movement, to participate and enjoy all the benefits of living in peaceful, stable Western society have all been compromised," it says.
The report's recommendations include the establishment of a Centre Against Racism for research and education purposes, an improvement in the accessibility of discrimination complaints mechanisms, community education and extra training for police and public transport staff to improve their understanding of "mundane and everyday racisms".
In Australia, Muslims account for about 1.5 per cent of the population. Just over 36 per cent were born in Australia.
