Why has the pursuit for happiness left us feeling more vulnerable and discouraged? In today’s society, we are faced with many unpredictable and stressful situations. However, many of us manage to properly analyze these situations and maintain our “sanity”. Most scientists have referred to depression as “the common cold of the mental health problems”. Depression, also referred to as mood disorder, loosely defined is a state of illness where a person experiences deep sadness and hopelessness, which can be associated with fatigue and low self-worth in nearly all their daily activities. Depression affects people all around the world and takes over many lives. Many of us experience depression because of certain unfortunate situations that occur in day-to-day living. There are many reasons why people get depressed, such as, a death of a family member, parents divorce, and loss of a job, prolonged chronic illness, or general stress.
Feeling down? Got the blues? You're not alone. Everyone gets sad (yes, everyone you ever met). Sad feelings can happen pretty often, too - more than half of teenagers go through a sad period at least once a month.
When you're sad, the world seems dark and unfriendly. You have a hurt deep inside that crushes your heart and your spirit. Many times you cry, and the tears are hard to stop. Crying usually makes you feel better. When sadness starts to go away, it feels like a heavy blanket is being lifted from your heart.
